Kathleen Walsh records silence for a living—thirty clean seconds of empty room, laid under movie dialogue so the hush never jumps. Every recording she has made since 1996 carries the same narrow dead band, a missing tooth in the spectrum no engineer can explain. Hired to capture the last sounds of a dying Pennsylvania mill town, she enters a condemned ironmaster's mansion where deer refuse to cross the yard, and hears her own young voice on tape, saying something unforgivable.
