Eleven months after her wife's death was ruled a suicide, marine biologist Dr. Sela Markham receives an impossible package: Lenore's dive watch, ticking backward. Lenore was one of four NOAA divers who descended into a mysterious bloom spreading across the Gulf of Mexico. All four surfaced alive. All four died within weeks, leaving behind notebooks filled with the same drawing—a spiral staircase descending through water. Now Sela will join the next expedition into the bloom, where the dead are waiting, the ocean has a sky beneath it, and something ancient wants her to stay.
