The Midwife of Mosul

Every child Salma Haddad delivers goes into a green cloth ledger, the way her mother taught her, and so does every truth a government would rather lose. In Mosul's old city she has buried a husband taken for a joke, raised two sons through sanctions and occupation, and sworn never to forgive the Mansour family. Then her eldest marries their daughter. Through dictatorship, kidnappings and the black flags of ISIS, one midwife must decide what her handwriting can still save.
