The Ghost Herd

Eleven seconds of shaky footage is all Piper Nash has: a frozen river black with caribou, and her brother's voice behind the camera eight days after the search declared him dead. Northern Labrador in March does not forgive curiosity. Piper sells everything and goes anyway — up a river valley of rotten ice and overflow, past a mining consortium that needs the herd to stay a ghost, and toward a basin nobody has mapped. Somebody flew out there with a rifle once. They will fly again.
