Bertram Dietz has three hundred pounds, a dead language, and a basement window freshly sealed under fake stone. East Baltimore, summer of 1962: a smiling councilman wants to clad the whole district in gray Dura-Rok and bulldoze the stable where the horse-cart vendors keep their animals. So Bertram, who has never held a job, decides to run for office. His campaign team includes a melon seller, a retired burlesque queen, his sixteen-year-old nephew, and a mare with no respect for speeches.
