Eleven-year-old Tommy Stenson has twelve miles of frozen Montana wilderness between him and the only radio that can save his grandmother's life. When a stroke fells the woman who raised him and a freak October blizzard buries the ranch road under mud and snow, Tommy saddles an old mare, calls his dog to heel, and rides into the Absaroka Range alone. With temperatures plunging below zero, creek crossings rising, and his own body breaking down mile by brutal mile, the boy must prove he's as tough as the land that made him—or lose everything he has left.
