About this audiobook

Summary

Nine-year-old Christine Turner learns one rule on Mardle Fen: never whistle after dark. It is 1971. Her father's farm is close to ruin when his plough strikes a buried black oak with Roman silver lying in the clay beneath it. Soon soft lights drift along the dykes, a whistling farmhand drowns, and a faceless man in a donkey jacket starts talking to her father at dusk. Only the strange old keeper of the pumping engine knows what sleeps under the trees.
