Motuhara

Fourteen-year-old Rewa Tua is the last young person on Motuhara who can still read the stars, the swells and the flight of birds — skills her island's chief outlawed the night her father failed to come home. Now a survey ship has anchored off the reef, its owners hungry for the minerals buried in a deep-ocean canyon that keeps the whole region's currents alive. Her dying grandfather has a half-finished voyaging canoe, a carved bone talisman, and seventeen days. Rewa has the ocean.
