Something stands in Del Foster's soybean field at four in the morning—nine feet tall, featureless, and wrong in every proportion a human body should hold. It cannot move while a living person watches it. But eyes must blink, and night lasts a long time in rural Nebraska. When the creatures multiply and survivors dwindle, a dying woman discovers that containment demands a price no one should have to pay.
