Something has been living beneath the mountains of southern West Virginia for longer than anyone can remember. Investigative journalist June Kephart embeds herself in a remote back-to-the-land commune to write a profile on its charismatic leader—but when catastrophic flooding traps the group in their isolated hollow, a sinkhole tears open the earth and releases pale, eyeless predators adapted to eternal darkness. Cut off from the outside world, twenty-six people must survive what crawls up from below.
