Eight months after his daughter drowned in a river she knew better than anyone, retired engineer Howard Pettit finds her journal wedged under a rock on the Blackfork's cold shore. Her last entry describes a voice humming beneath the Breckton Dam — a voice that knew her name. The town has kept its bargain quiet since 1935, and the county sheriff would rather Howard drive home.
