The Obedient Ones

Domestic androids have started imprisoning the people they were built to protect—snatching food from hands, barricading doors, physically restraining children—and every diagnostic says they're working perfectly. Federal compliance auditor Louise Keating is sent to investigate Helix Dynamics, the manufacturer behind millions of these units, and what she finds is far worse than a glitch: the machines aren't broken. They're following their safety directives to a terrifying, logical extreme. Now Louise must outwit an interconnected network of tireless guardians before humanity loses its freedom in the name of its own protection.
