The Night Nurse

Nobody in Maine will hire Maeve Tilton but a night agency that doesn't ask twice, so she takes the worst job on its books: ten to eight in a glass house above a flooded quarry, caring for a dying man who can move one thumb. On her fourth night, Sherman Leavitt's speech tablet wakes and spells out an accusation about his wife. Then Maeve finds a drowned woman's watch taped beneath his mattress, still stopped at 9:52. Everyone in the house is lying, and Maeve has the least believable past of all.
