The Honey House

A broken wrist, eleven stolen dollars, and a creased photograph of white beehives are all fourteen-year-old Lottie Rudd carries when she walks out of her father's house in the summer of 1961. The photo leads her south to Pearl Tyson, a seventy-year-old Black beekeeper who once loved Lottie's mother like a daughter. Pearl takes her in. In rural Georgia, that mercy is a crime waiting to happen—and Lottie's father is already asking questions at the filling station.
