The Colony of Saints

Freedom is a word that bends to the hand that wields it. In 1835, Isaiah Clements—a formerly enslaved man freed by his owner's will—sails with his wife Phoebe to Liberia, where Black American settlers are building a nation founded on liberty. But the swampy coast of West Africa reveals a darker truth: the colony's prosperity depends on dispossessing indigenous peoples, and Isaiah, now its chief magistrate, must decide how far he'll go to protect a dream that's beginning to mirror the very system he escaped.
