Antioch bakes, the cisterns are falling, and Decimus Varro has twelve days to save half a million people from thirst. A cracked arch above the Orontes valley is bleeding the city dry, and the procurator who controls the treasury would rather see the water fail than let his own theft come to light. Varro has stone, timber he cannot buy, an estranged wife who no longer speaks to him, and mathematics. It will have to be enough.
