Beneath the roots of an ancient forest on Vancouver Island, something is thinking. Mycologist Inge Skarsgård arrives at a sealed research compound expecting to study anomalous electrical signals in the soil — and instead finds herself in conversation with a distributed intelligence older than human civilization. But the biotech firm funding her work has no interest in dialogue. They want to harvest the network's signaling compounds for a biological computing platform, a process that would destroy the living mind beneath their feet. With sixty days before the drills arrive, Inge must decide how far she'll go to protect something the world doesn't yet believe exists.
